FIRE CORPS OFFERS FREE HOME-SAFETY INSPECTIONS

Lake Dillon's Fire Corps program now offers free home-safety inspections to residents in the Lake Dillon Fire-Protection District.

These in-home walk-throughs cover dozens of aspects of fire prevention and general safety around the household to help you ensure that you and your family are secure. Fire Corps inspectors will offer advisory recommendations for improving safety but do not enforce any changes nor make any requirements of homeowners.

Residents interested in the courtesy inspections should call (970) 262-5100 to set up an appointment.

Lake Dillon's Fire Corps is a volunteer organization that supports the mission of Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue. New participants are always welcome for training and program participation.

Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue’s Fire Corps are seeking motivated, attentive and enthusiastic volunteers to join the cause! LDFR Fire Corps is part of a national initiative to involve community members in the operation of their local fire departments.

LDFR Fire Corps members support their community and fire department in several ways:

  • Fire Corps support the Operations Division with large-incident support and tactical assistance.

  • Fire Corps engage in community-outreach programs, including courtesy home-safety inspections and Red Zone surveys.

  • Fire Corps support the Administration Division with special projects and clerical support.

  • Fire Corps assist the Operations Division with ongoing projects to promote community relations and firefighter safety.

  • Fire Corps support the Community Services Bureau with public education and information activities.

Fire Corps members are asked to commit to the mission of the fire district in the following ways:

  • Commit to six hours each month for support of the many functions of the district.

  • Commit to attending 50 percent of the monthly trainings each year.

  • Maintain current proficiencies in key areas, such as accountability and rehab skills.

  • Fire Corps members must be full-time residents of the Lake Dillon Fire Protection District, at least 16 years old, submit to standard background and driving-history checks and be approved for training by the administrators of Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Nationally, Fire Corps is one of five partner programs under Citizen Corps, the Federal Emergency Management Agency's grassroots strategy to bring together government and community leaders to involve citizens in all-hazards emergency preparedness and resilience. Citizen Corps partner programs share the common goal of helping communities prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies of all kinds.

Launched in 2004, Fire Corps is managed by the National Volunteer Fire Council and works with various organizations that make up the Fire Corps National Advisory Committee (NAC). Members of the Fire Corps NAC represent every major fire service organization in the nation. They provide valuable input, critical feedback, and supplementary ideas as to the direction of the program. Fire Corps is also supported by the United States Fire Administration and is funded through the Department of Homeland Security and Citizen Corps.

Together these organizations work to create valuable resources and foster programs that will bring community members into local fire and emergency service departments to assist them with non-emergency tasks.

The foundation of this national initiative to help local fire/EMS departments is the Fire Corps web site located at www.firecorps.org. This web site serves as a gateway to a compilation of information, various resources, and extended networking opportunities for both fire/EMS agencies and also citizens interested in volunteering in fire/EMS programs.

Fire Corps seeks to:
  • learn about promising practices being used in existing non-operational volunteer programs;
  • share this information with departments that want to expand or improve their programs;
  • increase the use of non-emergency volunteers in existing programs;
  • help citizens learn about and get involved in Fire Corps programs in their communities;
  • help agencies without a program to get one started.
